Safety for you and your family

  • Always lock the windows and doors including dead bolts
  • Put things in a place out of view
    •  example: inside a closed, locked garage
  • Thieves like the dark, have adequate exterior lighting, we recommend motion sensitive lighting as well
  • Clear shrubbery from around windows and doors
  • Install door viewer (peep hole) and use it
  • Activate alarms (if applicable)
  • Consider installing a motion sensor(s), with your alarm system, in case thieves attempt to break a window to enter your residence
  • Always appear to be home
  • Put lights on a timer
  • Check the mail and pick up the newspaper regularly or have someone do it for you
  • Keep your lawn mowed
  • Use curtains or blinds on garage windows
  • Never leave notes stating you are out
  • List all your property, including serial numbers and their location or engrave your property with your driver’s license number – keep the list in more than one place
  • Walk through and video tape your house, it’s easy to miss something you see everyday
  • Contact the police for any suspicious vehicles or people when you see them (not the next day)
  • Meet your neighbors and watch out for each other
  • Remember the 3 L’s – Lights, Lock, and the Law

Lost dogs

A neighbor was walking by the front pond by the “Castle” (about 3:30) there were two dogs running loose – a black medium sized dog of mixed breed and a small either cocker spaniel or springer spaniel.    The small spaniel followed the black dog into the water but then couldn’t get out because the water level is below the concrete ledge.  When the neighbor tried to help him out of the water he barked and snapped at her at which point the other dog came running over.  Fortunately, the spaniel got out of the pond himself.    When I tried to approach the spaniel he barked and was unfriendly.   Please be careful before approaching this spaniel. We do not want any more dogs attacks in our community.

Super Bowl Game Day DWI Enforcement

COLLEGE STATION POLICE DEPARTMENT

02/01/2012 - News Release: Super Bowl Game Day DWI Enforcement
"Super Bowl Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk"
On Sunday, February 5th, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Super Bowl Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign, the College Station Police Department will have additional officers on duty to be on the look out for intoxicated drivers. In an effort to ensure the safety of our traveling public, these officers will focus on DWI enforcement. According to recent data released by Mothers Against Drunk Driving "drunk driving remains the primary threat to American families on our roadways." If you plan on drinking, please designate a sober driver.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND DRUNK DRIVING

Myth: Coffee can sober up someone who has had too much to drink.
Fact: Only time sobers. It takes about one hour to metabolize each drink.

Myth: Hard liquor is more intoxicating than beer or wine.
Fact: A 12-ounce can of beer, a five-ounce glass of wine, and a 12-ounce wine cooler contain the same amount of alcohol and the same intoxication potential as an ounce-and-a-half of liquor.

Myth: Someone who has had too much to drink will look intoxicated.
Fact: Someone's physical appearance can be misleading. One drink can impair someone's ability to drive. Judgment is the first thing affected when someone has been drinking and important motor skills are next.

  • Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol related crash
  • 50-70% of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license

· Erratic braking or stopping without cause
· Slow response to traffic signals (sudden stop, delayed start)
· Nearly striking an object, curb, etc.
· Weaving or zigzagging across the road

Fishing at the back lake

We have received several calls over the past week regarding fishing in the back lake on Victoria. Any resident is welcome to fish (catch and release), children under the age of 17 do not need a fishing license. However, if an adult is helping with bating the hook etc. Texas Game Dept does require that you have a current fishing license.

Also, in confirming this information we found this web link thought it might give some ideas for summer fun

Christmas Decoration Theft Prevention Tips

Holiday yard decorations which include plywood cut-outs, inflatables, and lighted figures such as reindeer are a favorite target of thieves this year. The College Station Police Department offers the following suggestions for citizens who place decorations outside:

For plywood cut-outs - Drive a 1/4" - 1/2" conduit pipe approximately one foot into the ground and then use conduit strap to fasten the conduit to the plywood. Use a permanent marker or engraving tool to write your 8 digit Texas Drivers License number or place some other unique identifying mark on the back of the cut-out.

For Inflatables - If a loop or strap is provided, use a long tent stake (approximately one foot) to secure it. Write your 8 digit Texas Drivers License number (or some other unique identifying mark) somewhere on the decoration.

For lighted figures - (lighted reindeer) - Use a long tent stake (approximately one foot) to secure it. Again, for metal figures use an engraver to mark your property and for plastic figures use a permanent marker.

When securing your decorations please be careful of underground objects such as sprinkler systems, cable, and other hazards before driving conduit or stakes into the ground. In spite of these precautions you may still become a victim of theft; therefore, it is also a good idea to take a few pictures of your work. The pictures will help police prepare a better report as well as aiding in identifying your items should they be recovered later.
